Season of smoke: the scent of the dry

  • 2 min read

There's a particular time of year in the Top End when the wet season finally lets go. The humidity drops, the evenings turn cool enough for a blanket on the verandah, and the sky changes colour. A soft haze settles over the Top End, turning sunsets a deep, smudged orange that photographers wait all year for. Locals know exactly what it means. The dry season has arrived, and so has the smoke.

Season of Smoke is a slow-burning tribute to quiet rituals of cooler weather, where flickering fires, soft knits, and golden spices take center stage. This limited seasonal collection features three mood-rich scents designed to warm your space and stir your senses. From the smoky pull of burning wood to the sweet hush of vanilla and spice, each candle is an invitation to slow down, get cozy, and breathe in the season.

For the north, that season looks a little different to most of the country. No frost, no bare trees, just a haze that softens the light, turns sunsets a deeper orange, and settles over evenings just as the air finally turns crisp enough for a fire, a blanket, or a night under canvas. It's camping weather, campfire weather, the kind of stretch that makes people want to be outside a little longer than usual.

Vanilla Spice

The gentlest of the three. Warm vanilla, a little cinnamon, a little clove, closer to the smell of a kitchen than a fire. This is the scent for the very first cool evening of the year, before anyone's quite ready to admit the season has properly turned.

Cosy Cabin

Sandalwood, cedar, a soft leather note underneath. Less about fire and more about shelter, the feeling of pulling a door shut against the evening chill and settling in. This one carries the collection's quieter half.

Campfire

The scent the whole collection is named for. Burning wood, a trace of char, warmed by something sweeter underneath so it never tips into ash. Lit on the evenings when the haze outside is thickest and the smell in the air outside and the smell in the room start to feel like the same thing.

Why this season, every year

We don't get a dramatic winter. What this place gets instead is this, a haze that rolls in with the dry, temperatures that finally drop enough to notice, and a run of evenings built for fire, blankets, and long nights outdoors. Season of Smoke isn't trying to recreate a European autumn. It's trying to bottle something distinctly of this place, the exact smell of a Top End evening in the months when the sky changes and the air finally cools.

Limited, seasonal, and gone once the wet season rolls back in.

Which is, if anything, the whole point.
